T O P I C R E V I E WGoesTo11I have a set of 4-inch Shuttle mission patches (STS-1 through 51-L plus ALT and the program "triangle" patch) that I purchased at the NASA Dryden gift shop from 1983-85. There's one oddball in the bunch: The 51-G patch, instead of being circular with a sewn-on tab (as commonly seen), is a single piece, with the merrowing continuously sewn all the way around the emblem and "tab". It looks rather odd, frankly, and I'll probably buy a replacement for the display I'm putting together. Anyway, I just thought I'd check with the experts here and see if anyone else has this variation or has any notion of how common it might be. Thanks!KevinembangloyI too purchased my first set of patches (Space Shuttle, ALT, and STS-1 through 51-L) in early 1986 at the Dryden NASA gift shop and received the STS-51G patch that you described. Even at 12 years old I didn't care for the aesthetics of the patch, so I mail ordered another STS-51G patch from another NASA gift shop; one with the circular patch and the sew on tab. When you purchased the STS-51F patch from the Dryden NASA gift shop, was yours an obscure one patch with no sew on tab design as well?GoesTo11 quote:Originally posted by embangloy:When you purchased the STS-51F patch from the Dryden NASA gift shop, was yours an obscure one patch with no sew on tab design as well? Nope... All the other "tabbed" patches in my set have the proper sewn-on tab. I notice there's a one-piece 51-G on eBay for $6.99, so they must be pretty common.KevinOV-105I started getting patches at Dryden back in 1984. I got them there until 2001. I got to know a lot of the ladies who ran the shop (Nancy and Vicki)there. Most of the time they got patches from AB or Cape Kenndey or Hanky Panky out of Lompoc. A lot of the time it was who could get them the patches in time for a flight. I always liked the sales they would have got most of my nice desk top models that way. I even ended up working a with them for a few of the landings and air shows there. I didn't make any money I ended up spending it on stuff for my collection. It was like a junkie being a dealer.spaced outIf you look at the Shuttle page of my LB Space patches site there's a one piece STS-51G patch there in the right column which I believe is by Swiss Artex (or Eagle Crest). I assume this is the one you're talking about.lunarrv15Will the site be updated including patch difference from 26 to the present?STS-117 change patch. STS-85. STS-88. STS-42 from what I learn from here.spaced outErrr nope. I only put the list together to try to work out which mission patches Lion Brothers produced, based on discussions here on CS. Since LB quit producing mission patches before the 25th flight there was no reason to take it further.I believe Spacepatches.nl covers everything to the present day, although maybe they don't identify different manufacturer's versions of patches.
